Join us this Wednesday, February 7th for a special speaker, Brian Fretwell.

Brian is the founder of Why We Win inc., a Consulting company based in Boise, Idaho. As a speaker, coach, or consultant, Brian’s singular focus is on helping people understand Why We Win, so they can create the future success that is important to them.

Most consulting companies, and speakers, spend their time telling companies what they are doing wrong, where they are at risk, or how to dissect what might have went wrong. Brian spends his time helping people realize what they do right, what went well, and how they are in control of the successes they have achieved…so they can do it again.

Brian has spent his life working to extract value from industries and individuals challenged with change and uncertainty for the last twenty years. From heavy industries dealing with changing economics to drug addicts changing their lives he has become convinced that the biggest potential for growth comes from becoming Experts of Our Potential, which just happens to be the title of his most recent book.

Officer Uhrig gave an enlightening program on what is going on in our High Schools.  Some kids are using synthetic-type concoctions.  One of the names is Spice which is a Salvia Divinrum.  It looks like an herb and is sometimes smoked, chewed or vapor inhaled.

Pills is also a major concern as well as Alco-Pop drinks with names such as: FOUR, LOKU, Tilt, Joose, Twisted Tea and others.  A 12-oz. can of LOKU contains as much alcohol as a 6-pack of beer and only costs $2.69.  Teenage females are being targeted by the current advertising.  He said that he sees kids starting these practices at age 14.

Clothing trends also need to be moderated as some of the logos are drug related.  Brand names such as: ROOR, Piece of Mind, SRH, DGK, Cottonmouth Kings, Juggalos, Juggalettes, mushroom necklaces and more.

Officer Uhrig showed us pictures of vehicles with logos, t-shirts and hats.

Sharri and Tiffany shared information about a new program associated with the Food Bank.  It's called the Back Pack Project. Tiffany established the program when she noticed that many children were ill or lethargic in the classroom on Mondays.  In one case, a young girl would regularly ask to go to the nurse's office on Mondays only to return to the classroom a short time later feeling better.  At the nurse's office the girl would get juice and a granola bar and then be sent back to class.  It was discovered that many children who are on the free and reduced lunch programs do not receive proper meals during the weekend. The identified children now receive a back pack filled with enough food for the weekend. The food is given to the children discreetly and typically contains a couple serving size cereal boxes, juice, milk, applesauce, mac & cheese, cans of spaghetti or beans and weiners and some snacks. The cost per bag is approximately $5.00. The program began helping 50 children.  That number is now 75.  The Food Bank is always in need of food and money.  A Fund Raiser, Give Hunger the Bird, is planned for 11-11-11 at Stan Craft Boat Co.The goal is to collect 800 frozen turkeys.  T-shirts sell for $25 and people are encouraged to bring the frozen turkeys. On Saturday, 11-12,11, the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue is also planning a fund raiser at their burn training area on Seltice Way.

I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water.

Dale Peters is the Senior District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America.  He presented a very interesting slide presentation and commentary on the recent Boy Scout Jamboree that took place in July in Mount Hope, West Virginia.  There were approximately 38,000 scouts in attendance.  This is a new facility for the Scouts.  The camp cost $350 million to build.  It is a walking camp with BMX trails, zip lines, fishing areas, etc. on 10,000 Acres of a former coal mining site.  $50 million of the cost to build was donated by the Bechtel family.  It was 100 degrees with close to that in humidity during the campout.

Bruce gave us a great history lesson on the Jacklin family dating back from 1930's until the present time.
3 Jacklin Brothers came from the Midwest in the 1950's and purchased land in Post Falls from the Reynolds and the Becks.  They planted turf grass on the land.  They were very aware of the erosion problems of the Midwest and were technologically advanced in their planting methods.  They had several patents on the turf grass methods of growing.  In the 1970's, they merged with the Vaughn Seed Company out of Chicago.  Things went well until the economic downturn of the 1980's.  Using an Industrial Revenue Bond, they bought out the Vaughns and moved forward with their vision of developing a Commerce Park in Post Falls.  This vision came to fruition in 1997 when the Riverbend Commerce Park was developed.  The Jacklins put in their own water system.  Post Falls URD and URA helped with the initial infrastructure, sewer and roads.  The URD will be closed soon with the money going back to the city.  There are 1500 employees in the Commerce Park.
